HPE's Ric Lewis on the advantages of hyper-converged integrated systems
These days, even small and medium-sized businesses must use advanced IT, such as virtual machines and data analytics, to maintain a competitive edge—all with a limited IT staff. And similarly, enterprises have remote offices with similar requirements and constraints. These companies or remote offices typically do not have an IT staff to call to set up a server or to fix it if there’s a problem. Though it sounds complex, the term “hyper-converged systems” actually describes a technology that makes IT infrastructure tasks simpler. Ric Lewis, senior vice president and general manager, Converged Datacenter Infrastructure, Hewlett- Packard Enterprise (HPE), spoke to HPE Matter about the adoption and growth of hyper-converged systems, the future of the market and how HPE’s new Hyper Converged 380 (HC 380).
Can you explain what exactly is hyper-converged infrastructure?Let’s say you are a CIO for a large insurance company. In addition to your data center, you need to provide your employees in, say, over 500 remote offices with new applications and tools to provide top customer satisfactions and attract new customers. You need a remote solution which is easy to set up and manage in 500 locations, without requiring an IT genius.
A hyper-converged system provides an all-in-one offering that is simple to set up and maintain, and enables you to deliver virtualized applications in minutes. With traditional systems, managing 500 remote servers, storage and virtual machines is daunting and complex. It can take months to roll out a new application to each site. But hyper-converged systems remove that complexity and provide your employees with the latest applications and tools. The new HPE Hyper Converged 380 is very simple to administer and it’s easy to maintain a virtualized environment—with just a few clicks, anyone with basic technical knowledge can quickly create and run a virtual machine. The HC 380 is affordable and the technology easily scales as your business expands. This same simplicity will allow SMBs to spend their time building the new apps, rather than just focusing on keeping their systems running.
Do I have to be in my office to manage the HC 380?Absolutely not. Hyper-converged technology can also run on a mobile platform, which allows you to restart, start virtual machines, shut off the machines, check status and check utilization, all from your mobile device. And a unique feature of the HPE HC 380 enables you to restart a failed virtual machine from your mobile phone while at lunch if you receive an alert saying there is an issue.
What role will hyper-converged infrastructure play in the future of computing?We view hyper-converged infrastructure on a continuum in the converged consumption model. In the future, we plan to evolve the HC 380 into our Synergy family of composable infrastructure solutions. These solutions go beyond hyper-converged systems with new capabilities, such as the ability flex resources based on the needs of an application. With composable infrastructure, resources can be added and removed dynamically within the system. For example, if one application needs more storage, a CIO can add more storage. Then when the app no longer needs the additional storage, composable infrastructure allows those resources to be released back in the pool.
Over time, we’re evolving our hyper-converged solutions to have more and more composable capabilities. We accomplish this though software, HPE OneView, which not only manages the ease of use of the hardware and software together, but also allows you to access all these composable capabilities through a single API.
